The Latest in Hip South Slope Restaurants

Posted by John on Apr 2, 2015 11:30:00 AM

If you're having trouble picking a restaurant around South Slope, check out this list.

Song:  With its cool, low-light interior, this cash-only restaurant is the epitome of the word "chic." If the weather permits, they have a dining area out back, with cushions and chairs, and even heaters if its tiny bit chilly. Also, the bar is located right as you enter the joint, so if you need a quick drink before dinner, feel free to dive in.

Be careful when ordering, as the portions are huge at this place. The fried calamari is a must as an appetizer. Spicy noodles and Pad Thai come highly recommended. The restaurant also makes a nice, juicy skirt steak.

Prices aren't an issue at Song, as the menu is quite reasonable overall, especially by New York standards. A dinner for two could cost you around $14, with the highest priced item on the menu setting you back only $8.95.

Located on 295 5th Ave, the closest train is the R train at Union Street, followed by ten minute walk. (Please take our renowned subway system!)

Lot 2: This South Slope eatery has become renowned for its burger, which is considered to be one of the best in New York. The restaurant is beautiful with a laid-back atmosphere. With impeccable service, this place is one of the best South Slope restaurants out there.

While the menu may be lacking in options, the food isn't lacking in quality. Everything is organic, with grass-fed chicken and beef. The burger with duck fat fries is considered one of the best in all of New York City. On Sundays, the restaurant has a special Sunday Supper, which is a fixed priced option that changes every week. Most of the menu is around $20 range, making it reasonably priced overall.

Lot 2 is at 687 6th Avenue, between 20th and 19th street. If you're planning on taking the subway,(how else would you get there?) you could take the R train to 25th Street, getting off at 25th and 4th Ave, or take the F/G trains to 15 St. Prospect Park.

Giuseppina's: If you're looking for an expansive menu, don't bother coming here. This South Slope restaurant has only two options on their menu: pizza and calzones. You should be able to figure out from their popularity that they make these two things pretty darn good. Cash-only, this restaurant has a romantic air to it, with candles and a rustic old-school feel to it.

Guiseppina's is on 6th Avenue, between 21st and 20th streets, one block south from Lot 2.

Dinosaur BBQ: If you're looking for some good ol' barbecue while in South Slope, you'll have to venture out a bit to Gowanus to this excellent joint. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time. The unique interior almost feels like a tavern, fresh out of a Western movie, with wooden floors and unique decorations lining the walls.

The menu is quite large at Dinosaur. Choosing between a specialty and just plain barbecue can become difficult. The beef brisket is lean and moist, as are the ribs and pork. The Dino Burger is fat and juicy, something you would normally pick up at a bar. However, the Wango Tango wings, only available as an appetizer, are some of the best wings in New York. The Wango Tango sauce is available at your table, so you can slather it all over your food too.

Dino BBQ is located at 604 Union Street, and is easily accessible by the R train at Union Street.
