5 Unique Things You Can Only Do in Brooklyn

Posted by John on Feb 8, 2015 10:54:00 PM

While New York City is unique and offers everything you can imagine, there are some experiences that you can only enjoy in Brooklyn. The following activities are unique to the Brooklyn area.

1) Sit in an Old Subway Car

If there's one thing this city knows how to do well, it's transporting thousands of people throughout the area every day. Situated near many extended stay Brooklyn, NY locations, the New York Transit Museum gives a glimpse into how this process has evolved over the years. While here, you can marvel at the old subway cars with ceiling fans instead of air conditioning and sit in seats made from woven wicker.

2) Go Camping in the City

You don't have to travel out of the city to experience camping under the stars. Floyd Bennett Field has an exciting urban camping program with nine RV sites and 32 tent sites. Each site comes with a fire ring, charcoal grill, and picnic table, so at night you can roast marshmallows and hot dogs while telling ghost stories around the fire. During the day, check out the airport where Amelia Earhart once landed. There are plenty of recreational activities available including kayaking, nature walks, and sports fields.

3) See the Oldest Building in the City

Brooklyn is home to Wyckoff Farmhouse, the oldest building in the city. Built in 1637, today it houses a museum dedicated to Colonial American history, as well as Dutch-American history. Explore the house set up as it once was, and imagine what life was like for the Wyckoff parents and their 11 children. In the summer, a farmer's market stand sells vegetables grown in the original Wyckoff garden.

4) Visit a Revolutionary War Landmark

If you're staying in the Fort Greene neighborhood, you're surprisingly close to many Revolutionary War Landmarks. One of the most interesting is the Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument in Fort Greene Park. This monument was erected in memory of the nearly 11,000 Americans who died in captivity on British ships during the Revolutionary War. What makes this monument equally somber is knowing that 8,000 Americans died on the battlefield, which means that more people died in captivity than actual fighting.

5) See the Best Sunset in the City

At the end of the day, when you've explored everything Brooklyn has to offer, there's one last place you must visit: Sunset Park. Just as the name implies, this park has some of the best views of the setting sun. From the highest point in the park, you can look out over vibrant Brooklyn neighborhoods, see the iconic Statue of Liberty, and take in stunning views of the Manhattan skyline. Once you watch the sun slip past the horizon of New York Harbor, head out and sample the authentic Latin American and Asian cuisine popular in this neighborhood.

When staying with Brooklyn Suites, you don't have to go far to explore a few of the attractions in brooklyn new york that make this part of the city so unique.
